The problem of stretch marks is being met by more women and men. Stretch marks represent connective tissue damage resulting from too rapid stretching of the skin. Most often they occur during pregnancy, after birth, a sudden increase in muscle mass, a sudden increase in body weight or puberty due to hormonal imbalance.
Stretching results in the thinning of the surface layer of the skin and changes in the structure of the elastin and collagen fibers in the deep layers of the skin, whose function is to help the skin retain its shape. When the middle layer of the skin (dermis) is stretched abruptly due to the reduced elasticity of the skin, elastic fibers are torn off – this produces stretch marks.
Stretch marks can occur on any part of the body, most commonly the thighs, stomach, chest, arms, legs or back. Stretch marks are caused by rapid stretching of the skin, most commonly due to rapid growth, overweight or pregnancy, and also occur due to decreased production of collagen and elastin. Stretch marks are more common in women than in men.
